The disease, when one cheek swells, is commonly called flux. Patients look characteristic: the swollen red bulging part of the cheek above the lower or upper jaw. In medicine, flux (obsolete.) Is called limited purulent (bacterial) inflammation of the periosteum, which externally manifests itself as swelling in the gums and is accompanied by pain of varying degrees of intensity. This is not just swelling of the soft tissues, it is pus that has accumulated under the periosteum, giving all the signs of inflammation: swelling, pain, hyperemia.

Causes of the development of odontogenic purulent periostitis

The occurrence of odontogenic periostitis (flux) is caused by infection and the development of the inflammatory process affecting the periosteum. As a result of the accumulation of pus under the periosteum, pain and swelling of the gums appear. In the event of a purulent focus over the upper jaw, a swelling under the eyes is observed.

In the absence of timely assistance, these symptoms progress, the pain intensifies, has a pulsating character, a tumor-like formation is visually visible on the cheek, and hyperemia appears. There may be general symptoms of intoxication: fever, malaise.

Any infection of the oral cavity, most often dental diseases, can lead to the occurrence of odontogenic periostitis.

Caries is one of the causes of odontogenic periostitis

  1. Caries. A tooth with a carious cavity is destroyed, the infection goes down, penetrates the channels of the tooth, periodontitis occurs. Further, under the upper part of the bone (periosteum) there is an abscess.
  2. Gum disease The infection enters under the periosteum with the formation of odontogenic periostitis.
  3. Inflammation of the gingival pocket – gingivitis – can contribute to the development of the infectious process.
  4. Infection can enter under the periosteum from the outside in violation of asepsis rules. This can be facilitated by the use of temporary fillings during tooth treatment or insufficient root canal filling.
  5. Penetration of infection can occur with injuries of the oral cavity.

In order not to harm, we must remember that you can not apply a heating pad (warming compresses): inflammation can increase due to an increase in blood flow, thereby expanding the affected area.

How to treat flux

If there is pain in the tooth area, and even more so with the appearance of swelling and redness in the gum or cheek area, you should immediately consult a dentist. Self-treatment is categorically impossible. The dentist determines the cause of the disease, eliminates it, prescribes therapy. There may be two options: a diseased tooth is removed or retained. What will happen if you do not go to the dentist? As a result, tissue damage deepens until the development of jaw osteomyelitis, sepsis, damage to the orbit, brain, and any organ can occur. The germs that cause the flux are very evil. These are anaerobes that can live without air.

Gum flux patternThe principles of treatment:

  1. Antibiotics. They kill bacteria that cause inflammation. Only a doctor prescribes them.
  2. Autopsy and drainage of the abscess. If the pus in the focus cannot break through, it must be opened, allowed to go out, and not spread further inward. While pus is in the cavity, the disease will develop further. Until the flux opens, there will be no relief. Only a dentist can make an effective outflow.
  3. Local therapy. In this case, great importance is attached to rinsing the oral cavity. They are carried out at home, reduce pain and swelling of the gums. For rinsing the oral cavity with odontogenic periostitis, medications or home remedies are used. Medications act locally, without exerting a general effect on the body. Microorganisms are unstable to the effects of antiseptics.

In the case of surgical treatment of the disease that caused purulent periostitis, active rinses begin on day 3 to avoid bleeding or loss of drainage from the wound, which can complicate and slow down the recovery period. In the first three days, antiseptics and decoctions of medicinal herbs are used in the form of baths on the affected area (they keep a warm solution of the antiseptic in the affected area).
