Prevention of caries: methods and means

Although tooth decay is largely preventable, it remains a common chronic disease. Therefore, it is extremely important to remember the prevention of caries, the methods and means of which do not require large financial and time costs.

Caries problem

Continuous Caries

The early manifestation of caries is observed in a small area of demineralized (softened) enamel on the tooth surface, often in the form of a crack (groove) or between the teeth. Destruction extends to the softer and more sensitive part of the tooth under the dentin enamel. The weakened enamel then collapses, forming a cavity, and the tooth gradually becomes unusable. Caries can also attack tooth roots. At the same time, they become visible, because under the influence of infections accompanying caries, there is a change, deformation and shrinkage of the gums.

Violation of the integrity of the tooth is provoked by the creation of a favorable environment in the mouth to enhance the growth and development of harmful bacteria. Damage can be painted in various colors – from yellow to black. Symptoms of the development of the disease include pain, which intensifies when chewing food and drinking cold and hot drinks. Complications are expressed by inflammation of the tissue around the tooth, tooth loss, infection and the formation of an abscess.

The value of saliva

Caries stagesRisk factors include certain drugs and diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, which lead to decreased saliva production. Saliva has an important protective function in protecting teeth from tooth decay. It is necessary to dilute and neutralize the acid, which causes demineralization. Saliva is a reservoir of minerals needed in enamel. Their reserves will be required after the acids are neutralized. The bacteria form the acid, absorbing carbohydrates, and as a result it destroys the tooth.

The addition of a large number of fresh oranges and pineapples to the daily diet will help to activate the production of saliva in the mouth. In this case, in no case should you resort to the use of juices of these fruits or lemon juice for rinsing or applying to the dentition for a certain period of time. Otherwise, they must be washed off immediately with water. Rinsing the teeth with such juices will lead to increased formation of acid, which will provoke damage to the enamel. It is impossible to abuse such methods also because this can lead to an increased content of vitamin C in the body, since these fruits are rich in them. The situation will be even worse if a person simultaneously takes vitamin C in the form of separate or complex vitamins.

Treatment features

Healthy tooth structureMedications that reduce saliva production are mainly antihistamines and antidepressants.

The development of the problem is also affected by the violation of the mineral balance of the tooth structure.

If tooth damage is detected, it is impossible to hesitate with its treatment, since an increase in the affected area will lead to a more expensive, and sometimes even more serious and painful treatment.

The main methods of treating a tooth cavity are to drill the decay and put a seal (restoration) from various materials (for example, composite resins, amalgams, porcelain). Also, as a result of the fight against caries, it may be necessary to install a crown, treat a root canal, or even to remove a tooth.

Hygiene methods

It is necessary to brush your teeth twice a day and additionally use dental floss to eliminate food debris between the teeth. We must not forget to clean the mouth after eating with chewing gum, which is enough to use only a few minutes. A preventive examination at the dentist once every six months will also be useful in order to prevent a strong development of the disease.

Regular brushing - caries preventionIt is important to understand that violations of the integrity of the tooth (the appearance of a hole) are formed under the influence of bacteria, the development of which is provoked by food particles remaining between the teeth after its intake and not eliminated by the above means of oral hygiene over a long period of time. A constant stay in the mouth of more and more leftover food will create a favorable environment for the growth of bacterial cultures.

In order to prevent caries, it is worth paying increased attention to the choice of toothpastes and rinses, which must necessarily contain fluoride. They are able to reduce the risk of surface damage and cracks in the molars. You can replenish fluoride reserves through green and black tea.

It makes sense to use tea as a means of prevention also because it has strong antioxidant properties, due to the presence of certain elements in its leaves, which, by the way, are part of wine, chocolate and many fruits, but in much smaller quantities.

Healthy lifestyle-based prevention

Caries mainly develops by slowing down the demineralization process, as a result of which enamel loses calcium and phosphate when exposed to acid after eating foods and drinks that contain sugar.

Health benefits of caries preventionDamage to enamel, dentin, and in severe cases the tooth root occurs under the influence of the interaction of acids and sugar contained in food and liquids. In this regard, the transition to a diet that does not contain foods and drinks with sugar, or in which their presence is very limited, will help form the basis for caries prevention.

It is highly recommended to resort to the use of any foods, even with a low sugar content, between meals as little as possible. An ideal option for maintaining dental health is considered nutrition in the regime of three or four times a day, and not every few hours.

Excessive consumption of cola, tea, coffee, tomato sauce, cranberry juice, red wine, popsicles, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, curry, beets and blueberries should be avoided. In an extreme case, after consuming these products, you need to brush your teeth.

Additional remedies

Baking soda and salt will help get rid of plaque and limit the amount of damage caused to the tooth surface by acid. It will be possible to produce a positive effect on the composition of the tooth structure by rubbing fresh basil leaves and other herbs and plants with healing properties into the surface of the dentition.

Some fruits and vegetables contribute to the removal of plaque, because they have a natural abrasion.

Harmful coffee for teethThese include celery, apples and carrots. Nevertheless, their effect on the surface of the teeth will not be too aggressive and will not damage the enamel. They are also able to saturate the body with the nutrients necessary to improve the health, immunity and general condition of all organ systems.

Exposure to caries increases dramatically if a person smokes and drinks alcohol. The chemically active elements present in the smoke and in the composition of alcoholic beverages will increase the formation of acids, reduce the production of saliva, and provoke the accumulation of plaque on the teeth.

Prevention with sealants is also very effective. This method should be preferred, since sealants create a thin barrier preventing the access of acids to the enamel surface. Their effectiveness in caries prevention has been demonstrated in a number of systematic reviews.

Nevertheless, sealants are effective only on chewing surfaces of teeth, and should be considered only as one item from part of the prevention program.

Be healthy!
